I figured I was just bad with numbers.
I’d built the startup from 16 to 100 clients in under 4 years.
I’d personally hired, trained, and managed a consistent team of 30 staff members.
We grew into a multiple six-figure business…and still didn’t have enough profit left over.
I felt like an imposter. Who did I think I was to make this work?
I grew up in the cornfields of southern Michigan, living on a dirt road.
I was an average student - definitely NOT valedictorian material.
I had a degree in education, not business.
The fear came in waves.
We looked successful on the outside, but had to juggle money around for every payroll.
We had to always squeeze by to make ends meet in order to close out each month.
The fixed costs were increasing with each new client.
“I’m not good with numbers” became my inner mantra (obviously NOT the most helpful inner dialogue!)
The pressure of keeping things afloat weighed on me heavily whenever I looked into my employees’ eyes and realized how this job helped contribute to their family’s well-being.
There had to be another way to figure out this “money thing!”
But I didn’t know where to start. So our accountant gave us the equation:
Revenue - Expenses = Profit.
And that was exactly what we were doing, but it still wasn’t working.
So, believing we just needed more revenue to solve our problem, we opened a second location (sound familiar?).
The final blow came when that failed and we had to close it.
This lit a purpose-driven fire under me: To figure out business money management, once and for all!
This is when the Profit Stack System was born.
Since late 2015, we have been using this system and adjusting, tweaking, changing, and pruning it until we saw what was really needed to manage the business finances. We were able to squeeze out more profit, even when we were at full client capacity.
We wanted to see what actually worked on a real service-based business. (And surprise, it’s NOT what our accountant suggested!)
We discovered that as we grew into 7-figures, the system still worked.
